Short answer: a porch looks original when the brick colour, size, bond and mortar all match the house, and the roof uses the same tile or slate. Getting any one wrong makes it look bolted on.
Brick colour and size
Many older London homes use yellow London stock or red brick in older imperial sizes. Reclaimed bricks or a carefully chosen new match are often needed rather than a standard modern brick.
Bond and mortar
The pattern the bricks are laid in, and the colour and finish of the mortar joint, matter as much as the brick itself. A grey cement joint next to soft lime mortar stands out at once.
Roof tiles
Matching the main roof, whether slate, plain clay or concrete interlocking tile, ties the porch to the house.
Where it matters most
On terraces in Brentford and Hounslow, neighbouring houses make any mismatch obvious. See our guide to period porches.
